CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY OF THE MOST HOLY THEOTOKOS
The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos (1791-93), located in the center of Slavgorod.
The ensemble of the church and bell tower is a monument of classical architecture.
In 1791-1793, under the personal supervision of A.M. Golitsyn, a new Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built. A beautiful temple with an octagonal dome has the features of classicism of the late X111 century, its architecture is secular in nature.
The Temple was designed by the outstanding representative of classicism, Russian architect Nikolai Lvov - the author of the Nevsky Gate of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the post office in St. Petersburg, the famous Gatchina Palace, Boris and Gleb Cathedral in the city of Torzhok, manor complexes in the Moscow and Novgorod regions. The construction was supervised by an experienced master Luka Ivanov. All the building materials for the Temple were made on the spot, only the iron on the roof was brought from Moscow. The interior was decorated with an iconostasis, paintings and magnificent frescoes, which originally numbered 57 subjects of the New and Old Testaments. The best Moscow artists painted the Temple, the famous artist Vladimir Borovikovsky led the painting – the author of portraits of Paul1, Catherine 11, Maria Lopukhina, Derzhavin, Kurakin and other famous historical figures. A two-tiered bell tower with a small turret, two outbuildings and a parochial school building were built next to the Temple. Until 1930, the Temple was the main Orthodox parish of the district, but then after atheistic persecution, the Temple was closed and served as a utility room of the pier. During the Great Patriotic War, it suffered greatly from prolonged shelling, was an observation post of the Germans. There was practically no plaster on the building, the walls were full of potholes.
In 1987, the church building was transferred to the Slavgorod Orthodox Community, which currently operates as the Orthodox Parish of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. The building is of historical and cultural value and is protected by the state.
