The history of the Trinity church in Gervyaty.

The history of the Trinity church began at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when a big stone construction was built by the famous Lithuanian and Polish architect and engineer Vatslav Mikhnevich.

Prior to this, there had been a wooden church on the site of the stone one. It was founded in 1526.

The extant documents say that at least seventy people worked on the construction daily, and a brick factory was built not far fr om the settlement especially for the production of high-quality building materials for the church.

Lime, needed for the construction, was made of stones, extracted from the Losha River. To make lime-stone mortar stronger, the eggs were added in it, collected from thousands of local farmers. Tiles, manufactured in Germany, were laid on the roof.

Architectural features of the main sight of Gervyaty.

The Catholic Church was built in neo-Gothic style, being one of its best specimens in the country. It is also one of the three highest Belarusian temples. The bell tower of the church reaches a height of 61 meters.

The temple has three naves, separated from one another in rows of five columns, and a transept. The church also has a chancel (presbytery), but there is no apse.

There are numerous buttresses of multi-form that flow into the flying buttresses. The temple is characterized with narrow lancet window openings located in numerous niches.

There are several crosses in front of Trinity church. They are made of wood and decorated with various carvings. This phenomenon is largely typical of temples located in Lithuania.

A beautiful landscaped park is placed next to the temple. A variety of decorative and rare for Belarus plants grow in the park. The figures of the Apostles are also installed here.

The interior of the temple looks much simpler in comparison with the outer view, however, it is not without taste and style.

This temple is often referred to as “little Switzerland” and “Notre Dame Belarus”. Many Belarusians and guests of the country call this church the most beautiful among all the Catholic churches in Belarus.
