Belarusian Memorial “Buinichi field” near Mogilev

Monuments dedicated to the heroes of World War II can be found virtually in every large village of our country. One of the vivid examples of memorial complexes can be found not far from the small village of Buinichi of Mogilev region, which became known in the course of defensive actions. This memorial can be seen both on your own and within numerous excursions leading here, including the tours on military subjects.

Historical background of creation of “Buinichi field”

The line, which passed to the right of the village, had a truly strategic importance in 1941. The German fascist invaders tried to get to Mogilev, passing exactly Tishovka-Buinichi-Selets frontier, thus its defense played a crucial role not only in the particular battle, but also in defense of Belarusian lands in general.

The main strike was taken by soldiers of the 340th Artillery and 388th Rifle Corps, and colonels Kutepov and Mazalov led the defensive movement. The 3-rd Panzer Division advanced on the invaders side (which, by the way, lost 39 tanks at once during one of the battles), supported by air forces and artillery. Thus, the advantage in arms in favor of the Germans is obvious.

However, the defense continued for 23 days. In the course of the ongoing battles, enemy troops could not penetrate through the front edge of the defensive line for a long time, and when they finally managed to break through, they were soon pulled back by the arrived counterattack. Only on July 22, completely weakened and depleted army troops were forced to retreat.

Memorial of Belarus at Mogilev - a memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War

Due to such a significant battle in the history of Belarus, it was decided to establish a memorial called “Buinichi field” on that place in 2002. The key figure here is the chapel, beneath which the burial of the discovered remains of the Red Army soldiers is located. As for the interior decoration of the 17-metre brick structure, then there are memorial plaques set up on the walls. In the centre, there is the so-called “Foucault's Pendulum” – a memorial book to the fallen soldiers and the people's militia.

An arch, which leads to the chapel through a path, attracts attention at the entrance to the memorial complex’s territory. It is decorated with high-relief boards, which serve as a reminder and acknowledgment of the eternal memory of the heroes at the same time.

The remains of military equipment are located throughout the complex. A truly unique exhibit is of particular interest – a rare model of a German tank, literally got out from the bottom of the river Drut. According to historians, this type of tank has not preserved in such an excellent condition in any other museum.

The complex also includes a fairly entertaining element associated with a local writer, known throughout Belarus (and even beyond). Konstantin Simonov bequeathed his descendants to scatter his ashes over Buinichi field. Here the granite stone in his honour is located as well. Simonov visited the battle place in 1941 as a war correspondent, and thanks to him, many became witnesses of the events took place there.

And, of course, the memorial complex in memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War is complemented with the Lake of tears. It gives a special charm to the whole composition and brings a light sadness.
