There is a church in the urban village of Schuchinsk district called Zheludok. It is inscribed on the list of the historical and cultural property of the country. It is the Church of the Virgin Mary Assumption.
The village has an interesting and unusual name. The history of its origin has several versions. According to one of them, the name originates fr om the Zheludyanka River. During the middle ages, large oak wood grew along it so the banks of the river were covered with acorns. The other legend tells an interesting story about princes who in times gone, rested under the oaks after exhausting and long hunting. Suddenly a heavy rain started, but somehow not a single drop of rain fell on the men’s clothes. Then one of the hunters decided to build here a hunting lodge wh ere they could stay with their friends after hunting. As a result, a village began to develop around the hunting lodge and the countrymen called it Zheludok. Just as a small acorn can grow into a majestic tree so a single small house can turn out a large location.
The Church of the Virgin Mary Assumption, a unique architectural attraction, was made of natural stone in 1854. At the time, the structure was an unspeakable luxury – the facade and surrounding territory was decorated with numerous sculptural compositions and moldings.
This Catholic structure is commonly known as the Church of the Dormition as among Catholics the Dormition of the Mother of God and the Assumption are part of one holiday.
The Catholic parish was formed in Zheludok in the late XV century. At the time, the first church was constructed there by order of Kazimir IV but, unfortunately, it has not survived up to now. The structure that we can see today was specially designed by the talented architect Karol Podchashinsky in the second hath of the XIX century. The church is an example of late Classical architecture. Classical features of this movement demonstrate that: a rectangular composition with a semicircular apse, two lateral vestries and a transept. The Catholic sanctuary is covered with a gable roof. The main facade draws attention of the parishioners at first glance: it is impossible to miss a triangular fronton and a massive four-column portico of the Doric order. A century ago, the main facade was decorated with an octangular tented belfry with a proportional to it tower located above the altar part.
There is a crypt with depositions under the altar within the church. One of the prominent personalities buried there is Antony Tizengauz, a famous benefactor of Grodno, a political figure of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Besides, the flower festival is held in Zheludok every summer; it resembles some way the flower carnival in Holland. During the Belarusian festival, a king and a queen of flowers are chosen and a colorful parade passes through the town.
