Excursion starts with a picturesque panoramic view of Western Dvina
The composition of the monumental structures of ancient Polotsk, irreproachably calculated by the ancient architects, stretched along the Western Dvina and Polta, creating an impression of the grandeur of the size of the city and asserting the idea of its special purpose.
According to the testimony of archaeologists, the load of one and a half millennia carries it up to now on its shoulders! The monuments of Polotsk stand as immortal scenery to the already resounded scenes from the play created by history and create a complete picture of centuries-old Russian history.
During the tour of the city you will get acquainted with the magnificent St. Sophia Cathedral. For nine and a half centuries, it was buzzing around the walls of this cathedral, which was erected at the height of the Polotsk Region. Today this renewed church (museum and concert hall at the same time) is a stone epigraph to the centuries-old history of Belarus. Excursion to the museum of the temple, the descent into the cave.
Then inspect the exposition of the Museum of Printing in the buildings of the ancient Epiphany Monastery. The museum is dedicated to the book in all its aspects, ranging from the first handwritten scrolls to the modern book, introduces visitors to the history of writing, book illustration, printing, the activities of the first printer Francysk Skaryna.
Saint Euphrosyne monastery is the next point of the route. The Saint Euphrosyne Monastery was founded in the XII century and keeps the relics of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, as well as a copy of the legendary cross, which disappeared without a trace during the hard years. The pearl of the monastery, and indeed of all Belarusian architecture, is the ancient Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya Church - one of the oldest in Belarus, built in 1156.During the city tour you will walk through the ancient streets of the city, which remember the sounds of the steps of the legendary Polotsk prince Vseslav the Sorcerer, the first printer Francysk Skaryna and many other wonderful people. You will see the old Jesuit College, founded in Polotsk in 1580 and preserving the traditions of scholarship - since 2005 Polotsk State University has been located in its buildings. And what about the present? It is reflected in a variety of funny small architectural forms, near unique monuments: the Center of Europe, the letter "Ў". This city is indeed endowed with astonishing energy that is difficult to convey with words.
