Watermill in Ross town

Ross town is conveniently located in the Grodno region, Volkovysk district and was firstly mentioned in 1205. Then Ross was divided into two parts, and both of them were owned by Ilyinich and Yanovich accordingly. The first owner of the town became A. Chodkiewicz. A more detailed mention of the village is related to the 16th century, when Ross was a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Like many Belarusian towns, Ross experienced quite thorny historical way, especially being a part of the Russian Empire, Poland, and Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic.

It is known that in the 17th century, beautiful manor of Potocki family flourished, which at the beginning of the last century was passed into the possession of Bronitskaya family. The manor house has not survived to the present days, but the way it looked, it is possible to see at the picture of the genius artist of Belarus region Napoleon Orda. The only thing left of the famous manor is a large-scale park and several outbuildings, where the watermill occupies a special place, which was beautifully preserved and which attracts tourists fr om all over Belarus every day.

This massive mill, where flour was produced, became an integral part of manor life, having a certain architectural value. Watermill in the village of Ross consists of six floors with a basement. On the ground floor there is a waterwheel; on the second is a millstone. Upstairs, massive storage space for finished products was usually placed, and sometimes a specialized shop, wh ere the flour came to free access for sale. Sometimes the upper floors were occupied by a large family of millers.

Watermills on the territory of Belarus experienced hard times: when they were replaced by steam mills, the watermills were taken apart brick by brick to materials.

The watermill in the village of Ross is the most original and the biggest one on the territory of Belarus. It stands in a large manor park, though it was built later than the manor itself. The mill is made of brick, which is quite original, because the Belarusian mills were mostly made of wood. It is characterized by a massive foundation and rather big window openings, so that at first one can’t believe that it is a simple watermill. It seems as if in front of you there is an old mansion of a famous Belarusian family. By the way, old mills often inspired writers, because it was believed that there lived a lot of ghosts. Therefore, such places were always accompanied by unique mystical spirit.

This place of interest still looks amazing. Tourists usually visit the town to look at the Holy Trinity Church, belonging to the list of historical and cultural values of Belarus. It attracts not only tourists but also pilgrims, because there is the figure of Jesus Christ in the church, having its miraculous properties. But after visiting the church do not forget about the watermill, which will surely make a lasting impression, because it reminds a beautiful old mansion with its rich history.
