The Belarusian land is rich in various historic landmarks, which were being erected by men during many centuries. Both religious establishments and architectural buildings in the Neo-gothic style or classicism, and palace and park ensemble can be referred to it. However, there are a lot of places, which rightly have the name of historical and cultural heritage and are not included into one of the above-mentioned landmarks category on the territory of Belarus. Here, for example, the boulders can be referred, the appearance and discovery of which are covered with numerous unique heroic songs and legends.

The “Devil’s boulder” in the village of Stone in Volozhin district of Minsk region can be considered as one of such covered with epic songs and legends boulders. This boulder relates to the monuments of wildlife and it is dated to the Bronze age. The boulder is located on the territory of “Volozhin experimental leskhoz”. By the way, this local attraction is considered to be one of the largest of all Belarusian boulders.

In general, boulders are the fragmental rocks, which in its turn, differ in size.  During the time of pagans cult, boulders were endowed with supernatural qualities and  were offered gifts on every religious feast. Whereas young people think more realistically and skeptically about such legends and, more often, don’t believe in any of unusual boulders’ qualities, then the older generation pass on sincerely and with complete confidence to each other the legend about boulders.

If we turn to the “Devil’s stone” itself, then there are also a lot of legends connected with it. One of the most popular says, that more than a thousand years ago there was a small settlement, surrounded by forests, fields and rivers in this township. A tailor lived in a small house on the outskirts. He liked money and wealth very much, but at the same time he distinguished himself with diligence. He didn’t like to celebrate religious feasts, including Easter. Once he decided to break all the bans: and he didn’t put his tools away and worked hard at Easter. God decided to punish him for that, by turning his house into a large stone. It is this stone, which is a former tailor’s house, that can be seen by the tourists. And the village has borne the name of “Stone” since then.

Such a legend exists, that even if someone passes the stone by and does not stop literally for several minutes, a traveller takes the risk of losing his way. Surely, it concerns only the tourists, who came here, as the village of Stone itself is quite small  - there are about 700 people. By the way, there are quite a lot of villages with the name of Stone and practically each of them includes some local sights with its stories and legends.

However, despite its small size and low population, there is something worth looking at. There is a massive burial place of fascism victims: 72 people, which were burnt alive in November 1942.
