The church of St. Michael the Archangel in Zembin village

Candles burning in the church

When the majority of churches in Belarus were destroyed during the days of revolutions or war, the St. Michael the Archangel’s Church in the Zembin village is an exception. This church was greatly destroyed in peaceful times.

The church services in Soviet period

The Soviet regime failed to break the faith of parishioners and priests. The candles were burning during the wedding ceremonies and the burial service reading. Newborns were secretly baptized in the church as well. Just like in 1869, when a wooden church was opened for parishioners. Church services were also held in wartime. Later, the Germans used the church for defensive purposes, but they did not inflict a lot of damage to the building. Then was a time when the church was used as a warehouse.

"Roll-call"

If you watched the "Roll-call" with Nikita Mikhalkov, you would see a movie, when the T-34 enters the church and kills fascists. There you can see film stills with the destruction of the church of St. Michael the Archangel in Zembin village. In 1965, a film crew for some reason didn’t use scenery, everything happened really. Rain, snow and young atheists finished the destruction of the church. Very soon the church lost authentic look. Walls were densely scribbled by signs, trees and shrubs grew through the walls and also inside the temple.

The ice has broken

Gradually the restoration of the church started in the late nineties of the 20th century. But the death of the priest was the reason why the funding of restoration works finished and everything stopped again. Nothing could be done without financing. They were barely found only in 2010. Partial to the fate of the church, people endowed money and helped as much as they could, to restore the shrine. In a relatively short period of time the church was restored.  Now the church services are held here.

St. Michael the Archangel

Archangel Michael is often depicted on icons with a spear. He thrusts a spear into devil or a snake. St.Michael is the winner of good over evil. He was so revered and loved by the faithful people that the city of Archangelsk was even named in his honor.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in the village Zembin is a winner, too, because it was able to overcome and withstand all miseries. Now the temple with magnificent decorations is always ready to receive guests. If you happen to come across the Zembin on the 21st of November, the Day of St. Michael, be sure to visit the church service in honor of the Saint. It is a real holiday for all Orthodox believers. And if your name is Michael, ask for protection from your patron, and he will help you with no doubts.
Regardless of its past, the church continues to delight its parishioners. Candles are burning in the church on weekdays, weekends and also on holidays. People pray, believe in God, and come to baptize children. It means that life goes on despite everything. Look at the beauty of this temple, look inside, put a candle and pray. Let your long journey be successful, and even more exciting travels will take place in your life.
