The Temple of the Mother of God Nativity in Murovanka village

The village with a fancy name Murovanka is situated in Schuchin district of Grodno region. This village is famous for the fact that there was built the Temple of the Mother of God Nativity. This ancient temple belongs to so-called temples of defensive type. In Belarus, unfortunately, almost all these temples have not survived. However, despite this, the temple is about 500 years old; it is in excellent condition and is one of the main architectural monuments of the XVI century and the most important attraction of the Republic of Belarus.

Due to the lack of written sources and available documents that contain mentioning of the location, historians incorrectly concluded that the temple was founded in 1407. Moreover, the special shape of the building, the presence of tall, slim towers gave them reason to believe that Muslim minarets had been taken as an example for the construction of the temple. However, a more detailed study of the monument allowed them to determine the most appropriate time of the construction of “Murovanka”. Apparently, the temple was constructed between 1516 and 1542 years. It is a one-storey building with a noble gable roof. It should be noted that the thickness of the walls of this temple reaches 2 meters. There are cylindrical defensive towers in every corner. In times gone by, those towers had winding stairs that led to the both tiers of embrasures.

The walls of this temple are ornamented with decorative fixtures. First of all, these are small niches of various forms. These colorful spots stand out from the rough brickwork. The lateral facades, the altar and the tower are ornately decorated. Elements of Gothic style were used during the construction of the temple. It can be better seen in the inner decoration of indescribable beauty and enigmatic majesty.

At various times, the temple served not only as a place of worship and praying but also to protect citizens from enemy-initiated attacks. However, the temple was destroyed in 1656 during the cold war, and it was recreated only a few years later.

There are two revered icons of the Mother of God in the temple. One icon is local and it is located on the left side of the holy doors, while the other has been brought from the abolished sanctuary in Volchikovsk, being before that assigned to the temple in Murovanka.

The Temple of the Mother of God Nativity of Murovanka village is included in most tourist itineraries and excursions. A huge number of tourists and pilgrims visit these sacred places because this temple is one of the greatest ancient buildings in the territory of Belarus; besides, it has been well preserved up to now.
