Peter and Paul Cathedral in Volkovysk

Volkovysk is located in the western part of the country. There are many interesting sights for seeing.

The first mention of the town dates back to 1005 (for a long time, it was thought that it was first mentioned in 1252 according to the Ipatiev Chronicles). Not surprisingly, the town, existing for over ten centuries, has many archaeological and historical sites that attract the attention of tourists.

Volkovysk has also several religious sights including the building of the XIX century. This is St. Wenceslas Сhurch, built in 1848. Also, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, its appearance dates back to 1874.

In the XXI century, Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral appeared – Orthodox Church, built in 2004. The construction was conducted under the guidance of Archimandrite Vasily (Korzhich). The consecration of the cathedral took place in mid-October.

The cathedral of Volkovysk was consecrated in memory of the two Apostles – Peter and Paul. Their Day had spread in early Christianity. The Orthodox Church celebrates it on July 12, when the two apostles became martyrs: Peter was crucified upside down; Paul as a Roman citizen could not be executed, his head was cut off. The Catholic Church celebrates the Saints Peter and Paul's day on June 29 according to the Gregorian calendar.

This day is the celebration of the firmness of the Apostle Peter and the mind of the Apostle Paul. On the same day, St. Peter’s Fast is ended, which was established in memory of those apostles to evangelize. The feast itself is not included in fasting.

The church is brick in Volkovysk. Windows are high and arched. Twenty steps lead to the entrance of the church. The church itself is built on a high foundation. It is symmetrical and has a dome of impassive size.

There is a library and Sunday school near the cathedral. There are also outbuildings.

The cathedral is located in the heart of the town on 21 Lenin Street.

Today, along with other landmarks, Peter and Paul Cathedral is included in numerous tourist routes and sightseeing tours that allow to explore the historic peculiarities of the region.
