Lenin Square in Grodno

Lenin Square is often central in Belarusian cities, agro-towns, towns and villages. For example, in Gomel, there is a beautiful regional drama theater on it, and behind it begins the main pride of the city on Sozh —  Rumyantsev-Paskevichi palace and park ensemble (we recommend our guide if you plan to visit the city soon). This is not surprising, because in almost every village there is still a monument to this prominent figure of the Soviet era. Grodno also has Lenin Square, and it is one of the most beloved among locals and guests of the city.

Grodno landmark history

Lenin Square was not always called like that. Only in 1940, it received the current name. Earlier, the attraction of Grodno was called:

  • Gorodnitskaya,

  • Provincial,

  • Palace,

  • Napoleon street,

  • Tyzenhauz street.

An interesting fact from VETLIVA: not so long ago, historical justice was restored, and since 1992 the square was renamed in Tyzenhaus again.

But there was a place for Lenin Square —  that’s the name of the location adjacent to Tyzenhaus Square. A place popular among newlyweds of Grodno and tourists was formed after the reconstruction of the Gorodnichanka river valley. On the one hand, it is located between the building of the National Historical Archive of Belarus and Ozheshko Street, and on the other hand, it is limited by the Governor's Bridge and Vilna Street.

Now both squares —  Tyzengauz and Lenin —  are the heart of the same Gorodnitsa, the historical district of Grodno, which gives the city a resemblance to European ones. It was here that Tyzengauz palace was once located, which did not survive the First World War and burned to the ground in 1915. But the famous artist Napoleon Orda managed to capture it on his canvas, thanks to whose talent we have an idea about the appearance of many of the now lost sights of Belarus.

An interesting fact from VETLIVA: Gorodnitsa is a historical district, built with the participation of invited architects J. Sacco and I. Meser. And its appearance is connected with the name of Anthony Tyzenhauz, who for twenty years was the headman of Grodno.

In total, the ensemble of Gorodnitsa included about 85 buildings. These were manufactories, administrative and residential buildings, educational institutions, as well as the theater. Over 200 years of their existence, not all of them survived, however, those buildings that remained on Lenin Square in Grodno attract newlyweds here for wedding photo shoots and tourists discovering the royal city. By the way, with our guide on Grodno, this is done as simple as possible: the article contains extremely useful tips for someone who comes here for the first time.

Lenin Square: current status

The architectural appearance of this landmark of Grodno was finally formed in the mid-80s of the last century. Lenin Square is a rectangle with buildings on three sides of it:

  • City Executive Committee

  • archive

  • House.

The last side of the square overlooks the picturesque park of Zhiliber. And, of course, there was a monument to Lenin: the monument was installed right in front of the city executive committee.

An interesting fact from VETLIVA: you will not believe it, but in Minsk there are more Lenin’s monuments ... than the monuments of poets and writers! However, our capital is not only famous for them. Read our article about 50 places in Minsk and discover the capital for yourself from the other side!

If you decide to go on an excursion to Grodno or go on a tour of Belarus with a stop in this wonderful city —  be sure to look at Lenin Square and take atmospheric photos. VETLIVA is sure: you can fall in love with this city instantly, as in its time it had conquered the heart of the Polish king. It is beautiful at any time of the year, so you can devote a couple of days to a walk along its European streets in the summer, and in the fall, and in the winter, and in the spring.
