The Museum of traditional culture in Ivenets

The Museum of traditional culture is located in Ivenets township of Volozhin district in Minsk region.

It was opened in 1957, and it was planned that it would be a museum dedicated to F. E. Dzerzhinsky. The museum existed in such a format till 1990. An active study of Belarusian culture, traditions and crafts of that region began in that period. That is why that has led to the fact that the Museum of Dzerzhinsky was renamed into the Museum of traditional culture in 2006.

The museum is housed in a building which is an architectural monument of the 20th century. The main aim of the museum is to preserve and revive traditional crafts and trades of Ivenets district. Nowadays the museum houses more than 18 thousand exhibits.

The museum consists of four halls, each of which is a separate exposition. Each hall is dedicated to a certain theme.

The first hall is historical-ethnographical. It contains exhibits, stories about how was the way of life and culture of the villagers. In this hall, visitors of the museum will be able to see ancient books, photos, household items of the late 19th and early 20thcenturies. Here you can also learn about famous residents of Ivenets, such as Count Tyshkevich, the Dzerzhinsky family. All of them in different times made a great contribution to the development of the village of Ivenets.

The second hall is called “Ceramics. Traditions and contemporaneity”. Since the beginning of the 16th century, the borough of Ivenets has become known as a place that is famous for pottery. This hall is dedicated to pottery. Ethnographers and historians call Ivenets a “capital of pottery”. The so-called “glazed” ceramics made ceramics of Ivenets famous. Thanks to it, pottery became known far beyond Volozhin district. The hallmark of Ivenets is ware decorated with “flandrovka”. This is a unique technique of painting pottery. The picture that is obtained with the help of this technique is unique and cannot be repeated in any other technique. The technique of its implementation is very interesting: heated workpieces are wrapped with glass threads, combed with a comb and rolled smooth. The resulting figure is similar to a wave with stripes.

The third hall represents an exposition of Appolinary Pupko’s works. He is a master of wood carving who left behind many wooden sculptures, panel paintings and relief paintings.

There is a collection of iconic plastics masters of the 18th century in the fourth hall.

Today, a crafts center operates in the Museum, where there is a potter’s smithy, a weaving workshop and a workshop of wood processing. Here you can not only watch how masters work, but also look at the result of their work. In addition, the museum visitors can try under the guidance of a master to make a souvenir with their own hands.

The crafts center is located on the territory of an estate and park complex where is annually held the traditional festival “Clay ring”. Besides that, if anyone wants, the employees of the center may conduct a wedding ceremony, which corresponds to all national traditions.
