The Museum of the History of the City of Minsk

The Museum of the History of the City of Minsk is a unique complex, founded in 2010. The Museum is located in the Upper Town, in the ancient building of the 19th century. The main fund of the Museum is an archaeological collection of Minskof the 11-19th centuries and an archive of personal belongings, art works of the most famous citizens. Among the exhibits you will see examples of decorative and applied arts, rare coins, archive documents, manuscripts, paintings, rare photographs and many other things telling about the events of bygone days.

The building of Minsk History Museum is only the beginning of an exciting journey. The Museum complex consists of eight most interesting objects. In 2014 after restoration was opened the first branch of the Museum – the outhouse of Loshitsa manor and park complex, built in the 18thcentury.

The heyday of the estate fell on the time of living here Eustathius Lyubansky and his wife Jadwiga. The married couple was notable for exemplary hospitality and did everything to keep the residence in a perfect condition: the expensive interior, luxurious exterior decoration and a lovely garden for which Lyubansky often brought new foreign plants and grew absolutely new types, having started Belarusian selection. However, the Lyubanskies became the last owners of Loshitsa estate. According to legend, Jadwiga died by very mysterious circumstances, after that Eustathius left the rich estate.

Loshitsa estate has stood in the wings for a long time. Over the years the building fell into ruin and was completely reconstructed only in 2015. In the Museum “Loshitsa estate” you will see objects of the noble life of the 18-19th centuries, personal belongings and furniture of the Lyubanskies, and also you will be able to visit the exhibition “The Wheel of Time”, located in the outbuilding.

Do you know what attraction is the main historical symbol of residents of Minsk? It is the Minsk City Hall that is located on Freedom Square and is a place of holding city celebrations. An amazing collection of cartage awaits you in the small Museum of carriages and the Museum “Minsk horse-drawn tram”located in the Upper Town.

The Museum complex of the History of the City of Minsk also includes art galleries immersing visitors into the world of beautiful Belarusian art. You can look at thematic exhibitions of artists, photographers and collectors in the Art living room “High place”. Also the History Museum offers to get acquainted with works of the national Belarusian artist Leonid Shchemelev, which you will find in the City Art Gallery with the same name.

If you are interested in Belarusian art, you probably know the name of Mikhail Andreyevich Savitsky, who gave the world a cycle of 16 paintings “Figures on the Heart”, dedicated to the hard life of people in concentration camps.

 You can see works of the Belarusian sculptor Ivan Misko in the “Museum-Workshop of Ivan Misko”, after visiting which you will learn why the sculptor called a “space master”. In addition to sculptures, the Museum offers to your attention rare photographs, master’s tools and an entire room of celebrities’ autographs which the sculptor loved to collect so much.
