The Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary

The Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary. The village of Derevnoe

Our country can boast an abundance of magnificent Catholic churches, the beauty of which is hard to miss. Most of them are located in the western part of the country, Grodno region is especially rich in them: Gervyaty, Oshmyany, Vornyany, Ivje, Indura, Replya, Soly, etc. - it is possible to list them for an infinitely long time. They are all unique and not similar to each one. Roman Catholic churches of Belarus refer to the most unique monuments of architecture. Many Gothic revival churches have been preserved on our territory. Gothic developed in countries where the Catholic faith was popular and in Belarus it found an appropriate application in the design of Roman-Catholic churches. Our country is a fount of rich culture and historical monuments. Belarusian Catholic churches carry the imprint of the spiritual heritage of the nation: beauty, character, originality of the Belarusian soul.

Often Catholic churches were placed in small towns, boroughs and villages. The village of Derevnoe that is in Stolbtsy district is situated between Ivenets and Stolbtsy. Among all the attractions that strike one’s eyes immediately stands out an ancient building of the Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary (which was built in the 1630-ies). It is one of the oldest Catholic churches of Belarus and an architectural monument of Gothic and Renascence. Not far from the temple you can see a cemetery, in which there is a wooden Catholic chapel of the 19th century, where in due time were buried relatives of Felix Dzerzhinsky – his father, brother and sister.

The Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary is located in the center of the borough of Derevnoe but it is not so easy to find it. To get there you should go round the village on a bypass not on the main highway.

If we speak about its appearance, the Church is quite modest that was typical for those times.  Because previously great importance was given to a defensive purpose, to the protection of buildings.

The Catholic Church was laid on the donations of Princes Radziwills and Vishnevetskys in 1950.  Some believe that in those years it did not look in such a way, and the Church acquired its current appearance in the 1630-ies. In the second half of the 17th century the temple was improved – a three-tiered tower was attached to it. At its foot there are several monuments, on which were inscribed inscription in Polish. Not far from the building of the Church is a belfry and graves of priests. Close to it there is a Sunday school, in which teaching is carried out only in the Belarusian language. Services in the Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary in Derevnoe are also conducted in the Belarusian language. It is amazing that all the locals in this borough speak only their native language that nowadays is a rarity and surprise. The locals call their Catholic church the gem of Stolbtsy district. Today the temple looks neat and cultural. Residents of Derevnoe visit it with pleasure every Sunday.

The village of Derevnoe is growing rapidly, but at the same time it honors its traditions, keeps history of our ancestors.
