St Panteleimon Church in Minsk

Panteleimon is a Christian saint, born in 275 in Nicomedia, Asia Minor. He was known as a healer. Prior to the adoption of Christianity, Panteleimon was called a pagan name Pantaleon, it means “lion in all”.

A new Christian name means “merciful”. Today Panteleimon is a protector of soldiers and all those who are injured. July 27 is a day of this saint in Orthodox and Catholic Churches (according to Julian and Gregorian calendars).

One of the churches in Minsk was called in honor of Panteleimon. It is located on the territory of the military unit at Independence Avenue 191. The Church of St. Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon is a full name. The consecration of the church took place on August 9, 2004.

The history of its creation dates back to 1997 when the first parish took place.

On Christmas Day of 2000, its first worship service took place. At first, all church activities were held in a room of the House of officers located in Uruchye. This room was equipped for conducting worship. A Secretary of Defence gave his permission.

The construction of the church began in 2001. It was carried out at the expense of donations of both military men and ordinary citizens.

During its construction, worship services were held in a nearby military tent.

As soon as the construction was finished, the church was consecrated by Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk Filaret. Today, despite its location on the territory of the military unit, everyone can go to this church. There you can find an image of Duke Alexander Nevsky.

Nowadays, the St Panteleimon church is a regimental church of the military-historical club “Belarusian Hussars.”

In addition to worship services, parishioners take part in tourist activities and reconstruction of the important events of the war. So, in 2009, there was reconstructed the Battle of Borodino. A senior priest and two parishioners, accompanied by hussars, took part. It contributes to the education of patriotism, acquaintance with the basics of Orthodoxy, as well as promotion of healthy lifestyle.

Every day the church is functioning for 12 hours, from 9 am to 9 pm. Worship services are held three times a week.
