Rechitsa

History

The first mention of Rechitsa dates back to 1241. This small town’s name derives fr om the river Rechitsa, which was a tributary of the Dnieper, where an ancient settlement was located. It has a beneficial transport and geographical position.

The river Dnieper in the territory of Rechitsa is navigable. The cultural heritage of this wonderful town is represented by archaeological monuments and monuments of the Great Patriotic War. Two churches, Catholic church, chapel of Euphrosyne of Polotsk preserved in this beautiful town. The famous Belarusian scientist M.V. Dovnar-Zapolsky and the Soviet actor Yefim Kopelyan were born in Rechitsa. You can get acquainted with the culture of this lovely town in the local history museum or take part in the excursion "The Golden Ring of Gomel Region". You can relax and gain strength in a health resort, "Berezina" estate, and recreation center "Milograd".

This is an ancient town of the country. It can be considered the oil production center of Belarus. You can visit a huge number of sights of history and architecture. A site of an ancient settlement, as well as the Local History Museum, is located in the park of this lovely town. Here you can see the site of the ancient settlement, where archaeological excavations were conducted on the banks of the Dnieper. According to the artifacts discovered here, which are exhibited in the Rechitsa Local History Museum, this structure was erected not later than the 11th century. In addition to archaeological section, there is also ethnographic. Also, you will find out facts about the Great Patriotic War, get acquainted with the history of the region fr om the late 19th to early 20th centuries. You can visit the art gallery opened inside the Local History Museum, wh ere the canvases of Belarussian artists are shown.

The Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Church of the Neo-Gothic style, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is truly magnificent. The structure has a tall bell tower with a steeple, decorated with a cross. The main façade is decorated with a stepped portal. Also, the Chapel of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk is one of the symbols of this wonderful town. It is built in a place wh ere a steamship squadron carrying the relics of St. Euphrosyne stopped in 1910. There is a crucifix. The steel-brass structure designed by E. Agunovich is 24.24 m high; it was installed to the millennium of the baptism of Rus, also to the 50th anniversary of the victory over the Nazi German invaders.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This cathedral is an ornament of the town; it was granted the status of the historical and cultural value of Belarus. The Assumption Cathedral has a magnificent five-tiered iconostasis, which includes twenty-four icons. You can visit the art gallery, opened in September 2007. It is located in the historic part of the town, inside the late 19th-century building monument of architecture.

A monument in honor of fellow countrymen who died in hostilities far away from their homeland was built in 2003. The composition of the memorial (sculptor V. Slobodchikov, author E.Agunovich) represents seven storks falling downwards with folded wings and elongated necks.
