Brest – the heroic City of Belarus

Brest region extends to the South-Western part of our beautiful country. It is adjacent to Poland and Ukraine. This explains the peculiarities of the local dialect. The region is divided into 16 districts and 3 main towns of regional subordination: Brest, Baranovichi, and Pinsk. There are bit more than 340 thousand people living in the capital of the region. Considering the profitable geographic location of the city bordering with the Republic of Poland, Brest is a large cross transportation center. There are three customs checkpoints nearby, major transport routes such as E30 (Berlin-Warsaw-Brest-Minsk-Moscow) passing through the city and a river port operating in the city on the river Mukhavets.

Long ago the territory of the abovementioned region was inhabited by Slavic and Baltic tribes. It alternately joined different States of that time: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rzecz Pospolita, the Russian Empire, and the Polish Republic. Modern borders of the region were established only in 1954.

Brest region is a picturesque and outstanding center of Belarusian cultural heritage. Everyone notices this, because there are about 30 museums in the city. All of them are of great interest for tourists. For example, The "Saved artistic values" Museum is the only place In Belarus where there are exhibited works of art and rare items, seized by Brest customs officers.

Brest is the main city in the region and Brest district.

The place was first mentioned in The "Tale of bygone years" chronicle in 1019. In the ancient times the city was called Berestye. According to the most probable version, the name comes from the word "elm" (the name of a tree) or "Beresta" (birch bark). But there is also another point of view on the origin of the city’s name. The legend is about a wade (crossing) through the swamp.

The Museum basically consists of the settlement remains of ancient Brest, the constructions of the XIII century crafts settlement. Streets paved with wood, the remains of buildings of different needs were found by archaeologists at a depth of 4 m on the site of an old city. All these things are located on a wide area.

The city of Brest is known worldwide for its enormous achievements during the Second World War. Brest Hero Fortress was the second among the cities in Belarus to be awarded this honorable title for a desperate battle. The construction of the Brest fortress began in 1830. In those days it was called Brest-Litovsk fortress that was built to strengthen the borders of the Russian Empire. And Brest fortress was the first to have experienced the sudden attack of the German fascist invaders during the great Patriotic War. Desperate, uncompromising fights until the last alive soldier took place in the vast district of the fortress. After visiting the memorial of Brest fortress the guests of our country can plunge into the tragedy and the inviolability of those days.

Brest today

Brest is an important industrial center contributing to the development of the industrial enterprises of the region due to its favorable geographical bordering location. Among the largest factories there are "Hephaestus", "Brestselmash", hosiery factory, carpet manufacturing. Brest alcohol production has been always famous for its high quality.
