A heroic city of Belarus

The Brest region extends to the South-Western part of our beautiful country.It is adjacent to Poland and Ukraine. This explains the peculiarities of the local dialect. The region consists of 16 districts and 3 cities of regional subordination: Brest, Baranovichi, Pinsk. The population of the capital of the Brest region is slightly more than 340 thousand inhabitants. Considering the geographical location of the city bordering the Republic of Poland, Best is a large cross transportation center.  There are three customs checkpoints operating near Brest, as well as major transport highways, such as the E30 (Berlin-Warsaw-Brest-Minsk-Moscow), in addition to a river port on the Mukhavets River which operates in the settlement itself.

The History Pages of Brest

Since olden times, the territory of the Brest region has been inhabited by Slavic and Baltic tribes. It alternately joined different states of that time: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire and the Polish Republic. The current borderline of the region was established only in 1954.

The Brest region is a bright and outstanding layer of the cultural heritage of Belarusians. Take a look for yourself: there are about 30 museums here! Each of the museums is interesting in its own way. For example, the "Saved artistic values" is the only museum in Belarus where you can observe works of art and rare objects seized by customs officers of Brest.

Along with museums, the following monuments of historical and cultural heritage are of great interest: Brest Fortress, Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Kamenetsky Tower, Puslovsky Palace, Ruzhansky Palace, Suvorov Museum.

Brest - the capital of the Brest region

The city of Brest is the center of the Brest region and the Brest district.

Brest was first mentioned in the chronicle "The Tale of Bygone Years" in 1019. In ancient times the city was called Berestye. According to the estimated variant, the name comes from the word "elm" (the name of a tree) or "Beresta" (birch bark).  But along with this version of the origin of the name, there is a second option. According to legend it is about a wade (crossing) through the swamp.

The city of Brest is known all over the world for its great achievements during the Great Patriotic War. It is he who is the second city in Belarus, which is rightfully honored to be called a Hero City for desperate battles. The construction of the Brest Fortress began in 1830. At that time it was called Brest-Litovsk Fortress and was intended to strengthen the borders of the Russian Empire. But the Brest Fortress itself was the first to feel the attack of the Nazi occupiers during the Great Patriotic War. Desperate, uncompromising battles took place on the huge square of the fortress, to the last soldier. Visiting the Brest Fortress memorial, the guests of our country plunge into the tragedy and inviolability of those days.

Brest is a significant industrial center, as the development of industrial factories in the region is facilitated by a favorable geographical border position. Among the largest manufacturers are "Hephaestus", "Brestselmash", a hosiery factory, carpet production. Brest liquor and vodka products are famous for their quality.

Visas have been canceled for residents of 80 countries of the world who want to visit Brest. It has become even easier to visit Belarus, plunge into the charm of the hero city, and see the beautiful Belarusian nature.
